AMATEUR RADIO DAY 2009
Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication
Each year
on 18 April, radio amateurs celebrate World Amateur Radio Day. On that day in
1925 the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) was founded. In 2009, the
theme of the event is Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency
Communication.
It is not
by coincidence that last year’s meeting of the IARU Administrative Council chose
this subject at this time. While the Amateur Radio Service has traditionally
made its contributions to emergency and disaster response ever since its very
beginnings almost 100 years ago, this role has gained a lot of importance just
in the recent past. It has done so mainly for two reasons:

The History of 10 Meters
Posted by 9w2pck on Thursday, February 26 @ 17:04:34 MYT (0 reads)
The
Amateur Radio 10 Meter Band was created in
1928 after the International Radiotelegraph Conference was held in
Washington, DC, USA. Year 1928 (MCMXXVIII) was a leap year starting on Sunday
(link will display full calendar). ...
Ham Radio lost the 300 kHz segment from 29.700 MHz to 30.000 MHz in
1947. Year 1947 (MCMXLVII) was a common year starting
on Wednesday (the link is to a full 1947 calendar). ...
Launched in
1970 on a
NASA flight OSCAR-5 was the first
OSCAR to transmit on the Amateur 10 meter band and was built at University
of Melbourne, Australia.
In the late
1970s with the impending American FCC ban of the sale of older 23 channel
Citizens' band radio equipment that did not meet the more stringent type
acceptance of the newer 40 channel units meant that a surplus of 23 channel CB
gear was on the market. This was a windfall for Amateur Radio enthusiasts
allowing them access to fairly inexpensive radios which could easily be modified
for use in the 10 meter band.
American Novice and Technician class licensees were granted
CW and
SSB segments on the 10 Meter Band in
1987
As of December 19th, 2006 Morse code was dropped from testing, and now
Technician Plus and Technician class licensees can use the band from 28.100MHz
to 28.300MHz for CW/RTTY/DATA and 28.300MHz to 28.500MHz for CW and SSB PHONE.
Ham Radio lost the 300 kHz segment from 29.700 MHz to 30.000 MHz in 1947. Year 1947 (MCMXLVII) was a common year starting on Wednesday (the link is to a full 1947 calendar). ...

Amateur
radio, the scientific hobby that brings together enthusiasts in many
parts of the world, irrespective of race, creed, or social standing,
was first introduced into Malaya in the late 1920s.
Amongst the early pioneers was R.E. Earle, VS1AB, who
was active during 1928 to 1930. At that time, overseas transmissions
were scarce and irregular. Also the late G.M. Salt, VS2AF, who
commenced in 1930 from Glenmarie Estate, Batu Tiga, Selangor, and the
late T.G. Laver, VS2AC, from Masai, Johor. The late A.N. Randall,
VS3AB, operated from Johor Bahru. Reg. Hollis-Bee of the Public Works
Department operated as VS2AG from Kuala Kangsar, Perak. During 1932,
VS2AF and VS2AB operated successfully on 56 MHz over a distance of 10
miles.
